Getting ready to plan your big summer vacation? Lucky for you, Phantom Tri-River Charters is back in season with the best riverboat tours and Alaskan fishing trips! While we offer the top fishing excursions all year round, the best time of the year to enjoy the Alaskan wilderness is from May to November when the weather is beautiful and the salmon are plentiful! We know your excited for your Alaskan adventure, but take the time to prepare before you cast off. You’ll have the comfort of knowing you’re ready for everything by planning ahead of time.
Here are some of the essentials you’ll want to remember to pack for your upcoming Alaskan fishing trip:
Warm clothing
While Alaska is the perfect vacation choice for those coming from hotter climates, be advised that the summer temperatures may be a bit cooler than you’re used to. Dress in layers to ensure you’ll stay comfortable throughout the entire trip regardless of the weather.
Rain is practically a guarantee during the summer, so make sure your clothing is waterproof or water resistant. Avoid feeling chilled on an overcast morning by layering a light jacket and long-sleeved athletic pants over a t-shirt and shorts. You’ll be able to add and take away layers when the wind picks up or the sun peeks out from behind the clouds.
We also recommend packing two pairs of socks—a lighter pair and a thicker pair.
Proper footwear
Just because you’re on a boat doesn’t mean you’re safe from the surrounding water. It’s inevitable that water will enter the boat at some point—even if the weather is calm and the water seems placid. Waterproof footwear is a safe bet to keep your feet warm and dry throughout the day. Plus, it’ll keep you from slipping all over the deck. You don’t need to go out and buy an expensive pair of fishing boots though as waterproof hiking boots will do just fine.
Sun protection
You aren’t safe from a sunburn just because the sun is hidden behind the clouds. Powerful UV rays can still shine through on even the cloudiest days. Save yourself from a nasty sun burn by packing proper sun protection. Pack a hat and a minimum SPF 45 sunscreen to ensure that you won’t end the day with a painful sun burn. Remember to also toss a pair of sunglasses into your bag. Your favorite shades can do more than just protect your eyes—polarized lenses can reduce the glare off of the water, which could even help you land a bigger catch!
Fishing license
Don’t let your Alaskan souvenir be a ticket from the Fish and Game Department! The State of Alaska requires all aspiring fisher-men and -women to have a license. Plan ahead by purchasing your license online. This way you’ll have the peace of mind knowing you’ll be ready to go. Licenses can also be purchased at our office, so don’t fret if you forget your copy in the hotel room.
