Fishing on the Deshka River
The Deshka River is located in Alaska’s Matanuska Valley, which is in the south central part of Alaska and not too far from Anchorage. Attracting all levels of fishing experience, anglers from Alaska and beyond flock to this river every summer for King Salmon fishing. You can hire one of the many experienced guides and fishing excursion companies to fish the Deshka River for a half day, full day or even overnight.
Not only is the Deshka River a popular fishing spot for several types of fish, it also has one of the largest runs of Alaska King Salmon in the state. This river is often left open all season long when salmon reproduction is strong, because there’s more than enough fish to go around and enough salmon are getting out to spawn.
Facts about Alaskan King Salmon
What do you need to know about the Alaskan King Salmon? Here’s some basic information to get you started:
- It’s a popular fish: The famous King Salmon is also known as the Chinook Salmon. It is a common fish found in the Pacific and is very popular among fishermen and fish eaters around the world. For this reason, many Alaskan fishing charters—including Phantom Tri-River Charters—have dedicated trips specifically for catching King Salmon.
- Salmon are adaptable: As unbelievable as it may seem, salmon can go between living in freshwater and living in saltwater. Alaskan salmon are born in freshwater, and then migrate to the ocean where they are able to instantly adapt to the seawater. They live a few years in the ocean before returning to their freshwater birthplace to reproduce.
- They thrive on the Pacific coast: Get a map showing regions along the West Coast. Look to the north for Kotzebue, Alaska and to the south for Santa Barbara, California. This is the area where King Salmon live, but they can also be found in freshwater rivers, streams and other types of waterways that lead back to the Pacific.
- It’s healthy eating: As far as fish go, salmon rank high as one of the healthiest fish to eat. Salmon contains beneficial omega-3 fatty acids (a healthy fat that can lower your risk of heart disease), as well as vitamin B12, selenium and potassium. The fresher, the better!
