Safety Precautions: Pay Attention to Weather and Nature During Fishing Excursions in Alaska

Peace and quiet is an enjoyable pastime, and a luxury for most of us these days. So why not plan a getaway to someplace peaceful, yet filled with excitement courtesy of the great outdoors? If this sounds like a dream come true, then consider what a place like Alaska can provide you. Offering things like nature adventures, from animal watching to fishing trips, Alaska can also provide a much needed opportunity to reset your state of mind.

Since you may not be familiar with all that the wild of Alaska has to offer, there are important safety precautions you must pay attention to, even if you are touring with a group. During adventures like fishing excursions in Alaska, take heed of the weather and respect nature.

Mosquitoes

The species of mosquitoes in Alaska number more than 30, and just about all of them love to feast on people. Though seen flying around most of the day, sunrise and sunset are the times of day when mosquitoes are most active. Protect your body by wearing tighter woven clothing as barriers to block out bugs, don’t apply perfume or use scented soaps and lotions and always spray yourself with mosquito repellent, reapplying as needed. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors, so it is strongly recommended that you wear light or neutral color clothing. Also wear a head-net on fishing trips or hiking trails for additional protection.

Bears

When fishing on banks or hiking in the wilderness, be aware of bears, and never intentionally approach them. Only fish in areas where you have a complete view of your surroundings and do not leave food or caught fish sitting out in the open. Furthermore, carry bear deterrent pepper spray or pack some sort of weapon in your pack. If you are with a guide, feel free to ask about their plan for bear encounters.

Summer weather

Despite the popular belief that Alaska is always cold and covered in snow, many regions of Alaska can get warm. This generally makes for enjoyable weather, but sometimes not, with summer temperatures during the day landing between the 60s and 80s, and sometimes going into the 90s. And with average temperatures in the 40s to 50s, summer nights and early mornings are chilly. If you are going to be outside for most of the day, plan to dress in layers and pack extras in a hiking bag.

Winter weather

Once again, depending on what area you are visiting in Alaska, temperatures can vary. Conditions during the winter months can be harsh, especially since temps can drop way below freezing in many parts of the state. Winter trips to Alaska will expose you to temperatures between 15 degrees and 30 degrees with frequent dips into negative territory. Dress for warmth when planning to be outdoors, especially if you are going to be near water or on a boat.
