When Does Fishing Season Start in Alaska?
Alaska’s natural wonders offer breathtaking views, incredible wildlife, miles of unspoiled wilderness and, of course, some of the finest fishing opportunities North America has to offer. Many of our customers ask us when the best time is to fish in Alaska, and we’re happy to say the answer is “year-round.” While we offer salmon fishing trips from May through November, general fishing excursions are available all year long.
If you’re planning a fishing trip for a specific type of fish, you’ll want to plan around their peak season. However, if you’re coming for the experience rather than targeting a certain kind of fishing, you can safely book a trip whenever is best for you. We always recommend visiting in the summer, when the weather is especially pleasant and the fishing is great.
Peak season for certain summer varieties
Alaska’s freshwater rivers offer an abundance of fish, and their fishing season is regulated by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Here are some of the most popular summer varieties and when they’re at their peak:
- Alaskan halibut: Halibut season is from May 10 to September 30, with their peak running mid-June through mid-August.
- King salmon: King salmon is available from the end of May through the end of July, and their peak depends on the specific location and variety.
- Rainbow trout: Trout can be caught from the end of May through the end of September, with their peak lasting from mid-August through September.
- Silver salmon: This variety can be caught from the end of July through September, with peaks in both mid-to-late August and mid-to-late September.
- Pink salmon: Pink salmon can only be fished in even-numbered years (thankfully, it’s 2020), from the end of July through the end of August. Their peak runs about August 7 through August 21.
As you’re no doubt aware, Alaskan fish are often huge—you could easily catch a 50-lb halibut, for example, but some lucky fishers have caught fish weighing hundreds of pounds. Phantom Tri-River Charters boasts an excellent catch rate, but we can guarantee you’ll have a great time no matter what you catch.
When you’re planning for a fishing expedition on the Alaska rivers, do keep in mind that while temperatures can reach the 80-degree Fahrenheit range, they’re often an average of about 70 degrees, with nighttime temperatures dipping into the 40s and 50s. We recommend wearing layers and bringing sunblock, a hat, polarized sunglasses and insect repellent so that you’re prepared for all possibilities.
