With Winter Getting Longer, What to Do in Alaska?
Alaska winters can sometimes leave us cooped up indoors, looking for something to do. Whether you’re a resident or just visiting, cold weather doesn’t have to prevent you from exploring all of the area’s natural beauty. If you’re looking for something to do in Alaska, check out some of these ideas that will hopefully offer you some inspiration.
Go Fishing
Just because the weather might not be ideal, that doesn’t mean you can’t take a few hours or an entire day to go fishing. In fact, many Alaskan fishing expeditions are on heated boats with covered or indoor areas, ensuring that’ll you’ll stay relatively warm and comfortable. Winter fishing trips allow you to take in nature’s finest features while you work to catch yourself some dinner, all from the comfort of a heated boat deck. If the weather allows, you may even get in some fly fishing while standing on the river banks.
Check Out the Northern Lights
If you find yourself in Alaska at any time between September and April, you’re likely to get a glimpse of the Northern Lights. While there are tours that can take you to the optimal locations to view them, you might be also able to walk outside and see them on your own, depending on where you’re staying. If you have a clear night ahead of you, you might be able to see the Northern Lights just an hour after sunset. However, the optimal time to see them is between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., as this is when it’s the darkest.
Take a Day Trip to Nearby Hot Springs
Hot springs in Alaska are plentiful, and there’s always one or two nearby. If you’re looking for a place where you can relax and take in nature’s harmony, then a trip to some hot springs will do you good. Water temperatures will keep you nice and toasty regardless of the winter weather. You’ll find yourself in your own sort of oasis surrounded by Alaskan mountains while bathing in one of our many natural hot springs.
Take a Hike
Alaska is one of the most beautiful areas of the world, something you may take for granted if this is where you were born and raised. Put on an extra pair of socks and head outside.
