How To Cast Using Spinning Reels or Baitcaster Reels
Do you want to go fishing? If you are an old pro, then stop by Phantom Tri-Rivers Charters to book your next Alaskan fishing adventure. If you are new to fishing or if it has been a while, don’t worry, you can come too! If you want to get the most out of the trip, though, then refreshing your casting skills or learning how to cast a spinning reel or how to cast a Baitcaster reel will help.
How To Cast a Spinning Reel
Like anything we learn, we get better with practice. With a few attempts, you will be casting like a pro, or at least well enough to go fishing.
Step One
Allow the bait to hang approximately 12 to 16 inches beneath the end of the rod. Holding the rod at belt level with the reel slightly above the rod, use your forefinger to hook the line.
Step Two
Open the bail as you continue holding the line. Gently swing the rod over your shoulder until you reach a comfortable point. Now, release the rod in the same motion toward your target area.
Step Three
Allow the weight of the lure to naturally pull the line off the real as you relax your finger, releasing the line. Now, close the bail and prepare to retrieve the line.
How To Cast a Baitcaster Reel
Remember to use a fluid motion when casting with either type of reel. Each rod and reel is a little different, so give yourself time to get the feel of the one you are using.
Step One
Allow the bait to hang approximately 12 to 16 inches beneath the end of the rod. Holding the rod at belt level with the reel slightly above the rod, naturally allow your thumb to rest on the spool. Be sure to press the button and hold the spool with your thumb to keep it from unwinding.
Step Two
Gently swing the rod over your shoulder until you reach a comfortable point. Now, release the rod in the same motion toward your target area. Remove your thumb from the spool as the rod comes over your shoulder, allowing the weight of the lure to pull the line.
Step Three
Once the lure hits the water, return the pressure of your thumb back to the spool. Now, crank the real a couple of times to engage the anti-reverse mechanism, and you’re set.
